Prescription drugs
Norvasc is a prescription medicine used to treat high blood pressure, edema (fluid retention), and hyperparathyroidism (increased parathyroid hormone levels). It may also be used alone or with other medications.
The usual starting dose for adults with hypertension (high blood pressure) is 5 mg/day. In children, a starting dose of 2.5 mg/day is usually prescribed. To reduce the chance of an adverse reaction in these patients, a starting dose of 5 mg/day may be used. The usual dose for patients with hyperthyroidism (hypercalcemia), hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone levels), or other conditions is 2.5 mg once daily. The usual dose for children with hypercalcemia is 5 mg/day (5 mg of calcium). Injection of 5 mg of the calcium solution into a glass of water is administered as an intravenous bolus 10 mg/kg/day. Injection of 5 mg of calcium into a glass of water is administered by placing the oral syringe between the mouth and palate, using a small amount of the fluid in the glass to draw it into the mouth and the patient taking the drug orally at the same time. The dosage of Norvasc may be increased by decreasing the fluid in the mouth by about 1.5 mL/kg/day for children weighing less than 5 kg and by about 2 mL/kg/day for children weighing between 5 kg and 10 kg. When the dose of Norvasc is increased by 5 mg/day, a continuous intravenous infusion of the drug (into the oral cavity at a rate of 10 mg/kg/day) is usually given every 4 to 6 hours for children between 5 and 7 years of age. In patients weighing greater than 10 kg, the dose may be increased by 5 mg/day by decreasing the fluid in the mouth by 1.5 mL/kg/day for children weighing 10 to 12 kg and by 1.5 mL/kg/day by decreasing the fluid by about 1.5 mL/kg/day for children weighing 12 to 10 kg. The dosage may be decreased by about 1.5 mL/kg/day by decreasing the fluid in the mouth by about 1.5 mL/kg/day or by increasing the dose by about 5 mg/kg/day.
If Norvasc is given with an intravenous bolus 10 mg/kg/day, the patient must take the drug at least 2 hours after the intravenous bolus 10 mg/kg/day, and must not take Norvasc more than 2 hours before the intravenous bolus 10 mg/kg/day. The amount of Norvasc needed to achieve a stable blood pressure level at the start of the study will be recorded at the beginning of the study and during the treatment period. If the blood pressure level is not achieved within 5 to 10 hours after the intravenous bolus 10 mg/kg/day, the amount of Norvasc required to achieve a stable blood pressure level at the start of the study will be recorded at the end of the study. If the blood pressure level is achieved within 10 to 15 hours after the intravenous bolus 10 mg/kg/day, the amount of Norvasc required to achieve a stable blood pressure level at the start of the study will be recorded at the beginning of the study and during the treatment period.
